THE FOREVER GATE is a five-part novel. There are two ways to enjoy THE FOREVER GATE. The first is to buy all five parts in sequence. The second is to buy the COMPENDIUM, which includes all five short novels and costs less than the total price of the individual works.

This is PART TWO.

(**** This review has no spoilers ****)

This story will inspire a gamut of emotions in you, as it did for me, from sheer joy and captivation, to excitement, all the way to bringing you to the brink (or over the brink) of tears! You will find yourself laughing out loud, sometimes at the deftly woven humor, sometimes at the fantastic and amazing twists and turns the plot takes. The fact that Hooke can do all this speaks volumes about his capacity as a storyteller, easily catapulting him into that realm that is the exclusive abode of the best fantasy/science fiction writers.

This second instalment of "The Forever Gate" series strengthens and complements the first book, fleshing out the plot and characters further. It is mainly written from the perspective of Hoodwink's daughter Ari, providing a fresh, fascinating slant to the world, and the opportunity for the reader to perceive events from a female point of view.

Like the first, this second book is steeped in multi-level metaphors, causing the reader to question what is real and what is not; what really matters and what does not. An air of mystery permeates the book, and the origins of the world are suggested by one character, yet it remains to be seen if his perception is the true one.

The writing is exceptional, in that it conveys just the right balance of action, emotion and plot, while catching the reader in a tight net woven of suspense. Hooke's indefatigable concentration is remarkable, and he continually manages to compel the reader, always filling the pages with excellence and intrigue.

It sounds cliché, but I really can't wait for the next instalment!

The Forever Gate 2 Isaac Hooke 9780991842612 Books Reviews

The Forever Gate 2 was a great follow-up to the first book in the series. Here the mystery of the "Outside" continues, but now we are given a glimpse of just what that outside looks like. The characters are more fully developed in this book, now with the focus shifting to Hoodwinks' daughter. Every chapter has something suspenseful happening, making the book was very hard to put down, and Isaac's writing style flows like few others. To top it all off, the editing was superb. As a fellow Science Fiction and Fantasy author, I was able to honestly say upon finishing Isaac's first two novels that there's a lot to admire about his books. And as a reader, I was able to honestly say that I was never bored and never disappointed. Forever Gate 1&2 were both a very entertaining read! These books are a must-have for any Sci-Fi and Fantasy fan. The only negative thing I have to say, is that we still have to wait for Forever Gate 3!
The Forever Gate story continues in "A Second Chance"... The reader finds the characters in their real world, which is not pleasant... The characters must adapt quickly, because they're under attack... But from who and why, they don't know or have time to find out. They must return to the world set off in the first book... And the evil Jeremy, mayor of the city in that world.

I found myself eager to gobble up the whole thing again... So many twists and turns, and clever descriptions. Hooke I'm sure had a good time writing it!
This installment begins 10 years after the first one, that 10 years being measured by the passage of time in Ari's reality. Hoodwink returns for her as promised, and persuades her to travel outside the Forever Gate with him - fortunately not by climbing it.

So begins Ari's journey into a different reality, one no less dangerous than where she started. This is primarily her story, as she tries to help Hoodwink without entirely understanding the situation. It's a learning experience for her, and entertaining reading for us.

The bond between Hoodwink and Ari is so strong that I have to wonder if the two might have been father and daughter in reality, at the start of this complicated venture. Hoodwink is a bit cryptic, hinting that Inside and Outside the simulation may not be the only layers of reality present. I'm hoping he'll be back later with more info on that. Tanner is a new character, and an interesting guy, returning to the Inside with Ari to carry out part of Hoodwink's plan to stabilize the system

This installment has a lot more action than the first, but is a bit confusing. I have to question Jeremy's promotion from selfish, arrogant politician to Darth Vader clone in such a short time. He's become a formidable adversary, but his motives are unclear. I'm assuming the next installment will provide more detail.

As with the first, this installment is well written and has an even pace. It pauses at a logical point for the characters. I'm sure there are more plot twists to come in the next installment.
There is a science fiction conspiracy afoot. One novel after another is set in a closed city surrounded by high insurmountable walls or in a silo or cave underground. The inhabitants are are locked up and cannot leave.

The Forever Gate 1 starts in a closed city but you soon find out that everything isn't quite what it seems. Pollen and Wool meets the Matrix and soon afterward some vampires show up. Fantasy is invading the story but this is not magic as we know it. In a virtual environment everything is possible. Are they leftover characters from computer games?

If magic, trolls and vampires are your thing, then this book is for you. Hard science fiction fans like myself will have a harder time, even if the vampires are computer generated. The story moves along fast and the action is furious. Some of the fight scenes go on and on, but you can safely turn several pages forward until the fight ends to see who won, as only the outcome has any relevance to the story. I have found that many action adventure writer tend to have overly long, blow by blow, fight scenes that safely can be ignored. Try Barry Eisler's "A Lonely Resurrection" for example.

There is a good story here if you like science fiction action adventure fighting with several levels of reality. The secrets will make your head spin. This is a complicated world. Try it at your own risk.
